English author of historical romance novels and media personality who always dressed in her trademark pink outfits. After finishing her education she became a society reporter and inspired by the work of Elinor Glyn she began writing fiction. Cartland also wrote plays that at the time were considered racy; her 1926 play Blood Money was banned by the office of the Lord Chamberlain.
She became one of the leading hostesses of London society in the 20’s and 30’s and was famed for her daring parties. This is all in contrast to her later life when she came under much ridicule for her conservative ideas and her ‘expert’ opinions on romance. In 1991 she became a Dame of the British Empire in recognition of her literary and social contributions. At her own request she was buried in a cardboard coffin on her private estate beneath a tree that had been planted by Queen Elizabeth I.
