English biographer, poet and novelist. After graduating from Oxford she worked at the BBC during the war and then had various jobs including running a bookshop and teaching. She started her writing career late in life, aged sixty. Her first book was a biography of the artist Edward Burne-Jones, she wrote two other biographies – one of poet Charlotte Mew and one of her father, Edmund Knox, who was the editor of Punch and her uncle, theologian and crime writer Ronald Knox.
Her first novel, The Golden Child, was published in 1977. She wrote a total of nine novels, three of which (The Bookshop, The Beginning of Spring and The Gate of Angels) were short-listed for the Booker Prize, and she eventually won the award in 1979 for Offshore.
