Cuban novelist who was among the first practitioners of magical realism and who was awarded the Premio Miguel de Cervantes in 1977.  One of his best known novels is The Kingdom of This World / El Reino de este Mundo which was first published in 1949, and translated into English in 1957. It tells the story of Haiti before, during, and after the Haitian Revolution.
