American author of horror, science fiction and fantasy whose work has become influential among authors and readers of modern horror fiction. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was a child prodigy, encouraged by his grandfather who recounted gothic horror stories to the young Lovecraft.
He never received his high school diploma as he suffered a nervous breakdown shortly before graduation and did not complete his education. His first work was published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1923. In 1924 he married Sonia Green and they moved to Brooklyn, New York, but they had financial problems as Lovecraft was unable to find employment. The couple separated after a few years and Lovecraft returned to Providence where he wrote most of his best known stories.  Among his most celebrated tales are The Call of Cthulhu and The Shadow over Innsmouth, both canonical to the Cthulhu Mythos, a shared fictional universe.
