Scottish writer, who under his own name wrote literary biographies, poetry and novels, from 1893 he wrote his best novels, plays and poetry as Fiona MacLeod, which was more than a pseudonym, it was a second literary personality which was a closely guarded secret during his lifetime.
Sharp was born in Paisley and educated at Glasgow Academy and the University of Glasgow; he left before completing his degree. He married his first cousin, Elizabeth, in 1884 and he worked in a law office and bank before he devoted himself to writing. The work of Sharp and ‘Fiona’ was distinctly different and Sharp even corresponded with several people, including W.B. Yeats, as the two separate personalities for several years. Sharp died after catching a cold whilst visiting friends in Sicily. After his death his wife published a biographical memoir in which she attempted to explain her husband’s use of the pseudonym ‘Fiona MacLeod’.
