French poet, active in the surrealist movement. When he was sixteen he caught tuberculosis which resulted in a stay in a sanatorium and interrupted his schooling. Whilst at the sanatorium he met Elena Ivanovna Diakonova, known as Gala, whom he married in 1917 and had a daughter with.  He started writing poetry at this time and was introduced to the surrealist movement. His marriage got into difficulties and Gala left him for Salvador Dalí. Éluard married again in 1934 to Nusch, who had modeled for Man Ray and Picasso.
