Italian writer. Awarded the 1926 Nobel Prize in Literature for her idealistically inspired writings which with plastic clarity picture the life on her native island and with depth and sympathy deal with human problems in general. 
She was born on Sardinia and was educated by a private tutor and then studied literature on her own. In 1900 she married Palmiro Madesani and they moved to Rome. By the early 1900’s she was established as a writer.
